Oil drilling to begin on Georges Bank

Journal Article · · Not Man Apart-FOE; (United States)
OSTI ID:5919741
Three years of litigation between environmental groups and USDI concerning the legality of the Georges Bank lease sale have ended in a court settlement that will allow drilling for oil and gas to begin immediately. USDI is required to promulgate regulations to ensure that all drilling companies employ the best available and safest technology. NOAA must reconsider, in a formal manner, the designation of Georges Bank as a marine sanctuary, on or before the end of 1981. In return for these concessions, the environmental groups will drop their case against the legality of the lease sale, while retaining the right to challenge any action or decision concerning proposed exploratory drilling or oil and natural gas development.
