Experimental studies of flow distribution in a wire wrapped LMFBR blanket assembly

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5801191
An experimental investigation of the flow characteristics in a model of an LMFBR wire wrapped blanket assembly is presented. A 5:1 scale model of a Clinch River Breeder Reactor Plant blanket assembly was tested in an unheated airflow facility under Reynolds number simulation conditions. Pressure gradients, subchannel gap crossflows and local axial velocities were measured in the interior, side and corner subchannels, thus providing a complete, self-consistent set of data. The bulk of the experiments were performed for a Reynolds number of 22,000, representative of blanket full flow conditions. Additional data were calculated at intermediate (Re = 11,800) and low (Re = 4,300) flow conditions. Very detailed mappings of the axial velocity distribution in the subchannels and of the crossflow velocities in representative gaps were performed.
