Superdispersion delay of the meter-wave pulses of PSR 0809 + 74

Journal Article · · Sov. Astron. Lett. (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
OSTI ID:5799750
The integrated pulse profile of the pulsar 0809 + 74 exhibits a time delay at meter wavelengths in excess of that attributable to dispersion in the interstellar medium. This superdisperion delay increases sharply toward lower frequencies; observations at Pushchino show that it reaches abut 150 msec at a frequency of 30 MHz. The effect is interpreted as a bending of the pulsar's effective radiation cone, most likely due to twisting of the magnetic field lines through electromagnetic braking of the rotation. The low-frequency (less than about 30 MHz) emission would then be generated high in the magnetosphere, at levels greater than about 10 to 9th cm, comparable with the light-cylinder radius. 10 references.
