The authors discuss the electrocatalytic properties of a complex of Cu/sup 2 +/ with poly-4-vinylpyridine (P-4VP) in the reduction of oxygen and its redox behavior in the state adsorbed on a carbon carrier. The catalytic activity of the complex depends on the nature of the carbon material used as the substrate. It is shown that in the case of modification of finely divided materials (carbon black, charcoal), the activity of the complex is higher. The steady-state potential that is established on charcoals modified by the complex is higher than on smooth pyrographite electrodes (0.9 V) and reaches 1.2 V. For finely divided carbon materials it is shown that when their particle size increases, the catalytic activity of the complex at low polarizations increases.
