The ionic binding of a series of Ni, Co, Rh, Ir, and Pt complex ions on industrial AV-17-8 and Ku-2-8 ion-exchange resins gives heterogenized metal complexes which are active and stable catalysts for the hydrosilylation of styrene by methyldichlorosilane. Ru, Os, and Pd complexes are labile upon ionic exchange and under the hydrosilylation reaction conditions. The heterogenization of the complex catalyst leads to an enhancement in the regio-selectivity of the addition of methyldichlorosilane to styrene relative to the analogous homogeneous catalysis. An increase in catalyst activity and increase in the yield of the terminal addition product from 6 to 100% occurs in the series of heterogenized complexes of 3d < 4d < 5d group VIII metals.
