In-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy studies in /sup 192/Hg and /sup 184/Hg
The energy levels in /sup 182/Hg and /sup 184/Hg were studied by using the reactions /sup 154/Gd(/sup 32/S,4n)/sup 182/Hg and /sup 156/Gd(/sup 32/S,4n)/sup 184/Hg at the tandem accelerator at the Holified Heavy Ion Research Facility. Transitions were placed in /sup 182/Hg by establishing their coincidences with mercury K x-rays and through the comparison of the cross sections of the two reactions used to produce /sup 182/Hg and /sup 184/Hg. The energy levels up to spin 12/sup +/ and probably to 14/sup +/ were established. The spin and parity assignments are based on measured directional correlation ratios from oriented nuclei (DCO ratios). The data establish that the ground state shape is near spherical, and that the ground band is crossed by a well-deformed band at 4/sup +/. The deformed band continues to drop in energy in /sup 184/Hg. This drop is in contrast to the rise predicted by several theoretical calculations. Transitions in /sup 184/Hg were identified by their coincidence relationships with transitions up to 10/sup +/ established previously. The energy levels up to spin 20/sup +/, and probably to spin 24/sup +/, were established.
