Ground state shape and crossing of near spherical and deformed bands in /sup 182/Hg

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5374439

The energy levels of /sup 182/Hg have been identified for the first time through comparison of in-beam studies of the reactions /sup 156/ /sup 154/Gd(/sup 32/S,4n)/sup 184/ /sup 182/Hg. Levels up to 12/sup +/ in /sup 182/Hg were established from ..gamma..-..gamma.. coincidence and singles measurement. The data establish that the ground state shape is near spherical, and that the ground band is crossed by a well deformed band at 4/sup +/. In contrast to IBA model predictions that the deformed band will rise in energy in /sup 182/Hg compared to /sup 184/Hg, the energies of the deformed levels in /sup 182/Hg continue to drop. 7 references.
