Study of the reactions /sup 12/C(. gamma. ,p. cap alpha. )/sup 7/Li and /sup 12/C(. gamma. ,n. cap alpha. )/sup 7/Be at E/sub gammamax/=120 MeV

A diffusion chamber in a magnetic field has been used to measure the total and differential cross sections as a function of energy in the interval from threshold to 120 MeV. Investigations were made of the energy correlations of the reaction products, the distributions in the average energy of the particles, and the excitation energy of the various intermediate states. It is shown that at energies above the giant resonance the two reactions occur through intermediate excited states of the nuclei /sup 11/B and /sup 11/C. The excitation energies and widths of the resonances of these states have been measured. An estimate is made of the relative contribution of electric quadrupole transitions. Possible mechanisms for interaction of the ..gamma.. rays with the nucleus are discussed.
