The General Motors Smog Chamber Facility was constructed to study the influence of various vehicle parameters on smog formation as well as the chemistry of smog formation. A number of analytical instruments are used together with eye irritation exposures to measure various aspects of smog formation in the chamber. Recently the General Motors Smog Chamber has been used to investigate the effects of initial concentrations of hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen on several aspects of smog formation at the concentration levels found in polluted atmospheres. Initial concentrations of hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen were varied by changes in vehicle carburetion, changes in the exhaust gas dilution ratio, and the addition of various amounts of nitric oxide. The results of this investigation indicate that decreased concentrations of hydrocarbon decrease ozone formation, formaldehyde formation and eye irritation. Decreased concentrations of nitrogen oxides, on the other hand, have no effect on eye irritation or formaldehyde formation but increase ozone formation markedly. 21 references, 24 figures, 5 tables.
