Journal Article · · Sunpaper; (United States)
OSTI ID:5776704
Retrofitting houses to make use of passive solar space heating is reviewed. For a home with uninsulated outside brick, stone, or block walls, it is recommended that the south wall be converted to a Trombe wall. The Trombe wall may be unvented or vented. Both types are described and cost estimates are provided. Procedures for retrofitting a south wall to a Trombe wall are outlined. Steps involved are (each step is discussed): (1) choosing the wall location; (2) cutting the vents; (3) painting the wall surface; (4) building the frame; (5) attaching the frame to the wall; (6) attaching glazing to the frame; and (7) dealing with overheating. 2 references.
