Pulse radiolysis of aqueous solutions of tetrazolium salts

The pulse radiolysis method was used to investigate the mechanism of radiolytic conversions of tetrazolium salts in water. It was found that hydrated electrons reduce tetrazolium salts to tetrazolium radicals, which, disproportionating, given formazan; in reactions with H atoms and OH radicals, products of their addition to a benzene ring of the salt molecule are formed. The rate constants of the above reactions were measured, as were the absorption spectra of the H- and OH-adducts and the tetrazolium radicals.
