The luminescence (with laser excitation at /lambda/ = 337 nm) and self-luminescence spectra of a crystal of Cs/sub 2/NaLa(Am)Cl/sub 6/ (2.5 mole % /sup 243/Am), as well as the luminescence spectra of crystals of Cs/sub 3/NaLa(Eu)Cl/sub 6/ (1-5 mole % Eu) and Cs/sub 2//centered dot/ NaEuCl/sub 6/, have been obtained. The dependence of the spectra and the kinetics of the luminescence of Eu/sup (III)/ on the concentration of europium and the method used to synthesize the crystals has been studied. The fundamental similarity of the photoluminescence and self-luminescence spectra of Am/sup (III)/ has been noted, and the luminescence bands have been assigned to transitions between J levels with a 5f/sup 6/ configuration. The self-luminescence of americium in an elpasolite-type crystal of Cs/sub 2/NaLa(Am)Cl/sub 6/ should be regarded as a specific form of radioluminescence, whose main features are the structural specificity of the radiation, its high characteristicness (its assignment to a broad set of f-f transitions, including their Stark components) and its permanence, i.e., the absence of appreciable changes in the intensity and spectral composition during a prolonged period (4 years) of observation.
