Effect of disorder and crystal defects on optical spectra of f-elements in the elpasolite lattices

Luminescence and absorption spectra of Eu{sup 3+} (4f{sup 6}) ions are reported for Cs{sub 2}NaEuCl{sub 6} and Cs{sub 2}KEuCl{sub 6} crystals. For the K-elpasolite, the enhancement of zero-phonon (0-0) transitions is revealed. The observed phenomenon is presumably due to dynamic disorder of the cesium sublattice. The dimensions of the cell occupied by Cs{sup +} ion in the studied crystals are estimated. It is shown that the enhancement of the 0-0 transitions between the sublevels of the f-shell of Eu{sup 3+} can also be caused by radiation defects due to self-irradiation of the Cs{sub 2}NaLu(Eu)Cl{sub 6} crystal doped with {sup 244}Cm.
