Evidence for one-dimensional spin order in V/sub 3/O/sub 5/

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev., B: Condens. Matter; (United States)
Specific-heat measurements establish the Neel transition in V/sub 3/O/sub 5/ at 76 K, in agreement with previous neutron-diffraction and magnetic-torque experiments. The small value of the entropy of transition (0.29 J/K mole V/sub 3/O/sub 5/), when considered with other data, suggests the possibility of one-dimensional spin order above T/sub N/. Strong nearest-neighbor exchange interactions are thought to be responsible for the one-dimensional effects. A Debye temperature of 444 K is reported.
