Observations of the electric quadrupole moments of a number of nuclear levels: /sup 111/Cd (247 keV), /sup 115/In (ground state), /sup 119/Sn (24 keV), and /sup 121/Sb (ground state) : based on the electric field gradients in a series of trans-(dimethyl organometallic moieties)

Nuclear electric quadrupole moments (Q) found in the literature for the 247 keV level of /sup 111/Cd, the ground state of /sup 115/In, the 24 keV level of /sup 119/Sn, and the ground state of /sup 121/Sb are used to calculate values for electric field gradients (eq/sup n/) at the nuclear sites in a series of isoelectronic, pseudoisostructural, linear (CH/sub 3/)/sub 2/M moieties (M=Cd/sup II/, In/sup III/, Sn/sup IV/, and Sb/sup V/) whose nuclear quadrupole coupling constants (e/sup 2/q/sup n/Q) have been reported previously. Because several widely different Q values exist for each of these levels, the range of eq/sup n/ permitted is large and opposing conclusions about the bonding of a given system cannot be excluded. Q (/sup 119/Sn) =-0.065b is used as a reference to compare electric field gradients based on all these Q values.
