Brisbane, Australia-based metals producer MIM has begun research to develop coal bed methane as a new energy source that could lead to gas-fired power stations by 1995. MIM had contracted the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) for a three-year research program at two sites in Queensland`s Bowen Basin. It has also joined a local unit of Mitsubishi Gas Chemical to research viability of supplying coal bed methane from a third Bowen Basin site for a possible methanol plant. The director of CSIRO`s institute of minerals, Alan Reid, says there is more gas in the coal seams of eastern Australia than in the offshore reserves of the northwest shelf.
