Normal ionizing shock as a theta pinch preionizer
The normal ionizing shock wave is considered as a potential preionizer for high density (greater than or equal to 15 mtorr), high bias field (greater than or equal to 1 kG) theta pinches. Available experimental data compare well with the theory of Kunkel and Gross. Limitations to the validity of the theory due to finite ionization rate, and to radial plasma drift are determined.
