Routine activation analysis often encompasses a wide variety of sample matrices, including geologic, biological, and various bioenvironmental samples. While these types of samples need little handling and preparation, the analysis of air filters can pose unique problems. Each sample type (e.g., Teflon, Whatman, charcoal, etc.) presents its own requirements and potential difficulties during the conduct of an experiment and therefore influences the quality of the data reported. The Arctic aerosol samples from the Polar Sunrise Experiment of 1992 were typical of the many air-filter experiments that the U of Illinois facility conducts. Nearly 1300 samples were analyzed for short-lived (iodine, bromine, sodium, vanadium, potassium, chlorine, aluminum, manganese, and calcium), medium-lived (lanthanum, arsenic, antimony, and samarium), and long-lived (neodymium, cerium, ytterbium, lutetium, thorium, chromium, hafnium, cesium, terbium, scandium, rubidium, iron, tantalum, cobalt, europium, and selenium) elements. The filters were of charcoal (230 filters), Teflon (224), impactor (150), Whatman (216), and other paper (448) types.
