Tow techniques for offshore pipelaying examined for advantages, limitations

Journal Article · · Oil Gas J.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5758556
Often a more attractive choice than traditional pipelaying methods, tow techniques for offshore pipeline construction involve the support of a tow vessel such as a tug boat. Four towing options exist - the bottom, off-bottom, near-surface, and constant-tow-depth (CTD) methods. Although only a limited length of pipe can be towed, the towing techniques are suitable for subsea completions, deepwater fields, and early production systems because these applications use relatively short pipe lengths. A systematic technoeconomic assessment will aid in selecting the optimum pipelaying technique.
