DP pipelay vessel `Solitaire`: Plunging into the deep

``Solitaire``, a DP pipelay vessel which will be suited for laying large lines economically, and will also be able to lay pipelines in very deep water in the S-lay mode, is expected to enter the pipelay market at the end of 1995. The method of installation of pipelines in very deep water is discussed in this paper, as well as the limitations to the technique. Knowledge of static and dynamic pipe stress behavior during the laying process has been gained from pipeline instrumentation tests. Solving problems, such as recovery of a pipeline in case of damage, is a key element to the feasibility of deepwater pipelines.
