Rotating anode x-ray studies of Kr and Xe monolayers absorbed on the single crystal graphite(001) surface are described. Orientational epitaxy is observed for the Kr monolayer in agreement with previous electron diffraction studies. The Xe solid also displays a rotated phase at roughly-equal115 K. A comparison of the x-ray and electron diffraction techniques for structural studies of adsorbates on single crystals is made.
