Magnetic behavior in the U/sub 1-x/Th/sub x/Cu/sub 2/Si/sub 2/ system

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5754275

The compound UC/sub 2/Si/sub 2/ has been found to be ferromagnetic at low temperatures with a Curie temperature of 101/sup 0/K. The magnetization follows a Curie-Weiss law in the paramagnetic region with an effective magneton number of 2.12 Bohr magnetons per uranium atom. Partial substitution of Th atoms for the U atoms results in an expansion of the lattice, a rapid drop in the Curie temperature, and a sizable increase in the coercive field.
