Effects of air pollution on livestock and vegetation

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5750877
Instances where the air pollution from smelters have caused illness and death of livestock are recounted. Anaconda, Montana, and Ducktown, Tennessee are discussed as examples where control technology was developed after a severe environmental insult was recognized. Other cases discussed include the Jordan River Valley in Utah, and the Columbia River Valley in Washington, both cases where smelters were the pollution source. Many of the early and significant air pollution problems in the USA were associated with smelting of lead, copper, and other metals. The effects of SO/sub 2/ on plants are discussed. Symptoms are described, as are the effects of fluorine on plants and animals.
