Title: The effect of methanol and ethylene glycol on cobalt carbonyl-catalyzed hydroformylation

Journal Article · · J. Catal.; (United States)

The disproportionation of the hydroformylation catalyst dicobalt octacarbonyl with alcohols to (Co(ROH)/sub 6/)(Co(CO)/sub 4/)/sub 2/ was tested at 23/sup 0/C and 1 atm and at 175/sup 0/C and 1400 psi with methanol, ethylene glycol, and benzyl alcohol. Under hydroformylation conditions only ethylene glycol favored the disproportionation equilibrium. The addition of ethylene glycol to the hydroformylation of cyclohexene with dicobalt octacarbonyl to cyclohexanecarboxaldehyde inhibited the reaction initially, but conversion with and without ethylene glycol was nearly the same after 105 min, as the ethylene glycol was consumed in acetal formation.
