The specific activity for propylene hydroformylation of zinc oxide-supported rhodium carbonyl clusters (heat-treated at 160/sup 0/-180/sup 0/C under vacuum or a hydroformylation mixture) at 25/sup 0/-160/sup 0/C decreased in the order Rh/sub 4/(CO)/sub 12/ > Rh/sub 6/(CO)/sub 16/ > Rh/sub 7/(CO)/sub 16/3NEt/sub 4/ > Rh/sub 13/(CO)/sub 23/H/sub 2/2NBu/sub 4/ with a total decrease of about one order of magnitude. Various supported rhodium carbonyl complexes were inactive under the same conditions. The selectivities for normal isomer products of the clusters were higher for the larger clusters. The rhodium carbonyl clusters had similar specific activities when supported on magnesium, titanium, and zirconium oxides, but with these oxides, the selectivity for the iso-aldehyde was higher, and with these oxides and lanthanum oxide, further hydrogenation to alcohol occurred. The ethylene or propylene hydroformylation activity of supported rhodium/cobalt carbonyl bimetallic clusters was approximately proportional to the rhodium content, but the selectivity for normal aldehydes increased with increasing cobalt content. Rhodium clusters supported on acidic oxides showed very low activity.
