Center for science and engineering education undergraduate programs
As part of a sustained commitment to the education and training of future scientific researchers, the Department of Energy (DOE) and Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory (LBL) support a variety of activities directed at the development of undergraduate students. Two undergraduate programs, the Laboratory Co-op Program and the Science and Engineering Research Semester, comprise the core of the current Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory Center for Science and Engineering Education activity in undergraduate student education. These programs provide opportunities for top undergraduate students from colleges and universities throughout the nation to work in advanced research projects carried out primarily for the Department of Energy. Undergraduate programs are designed to attract participants who plan to pursue careers in science, engineering and education fields relevant to future national science needs. The primary goal is to educate and train scientists and engineers to meet the nation's future manpower requirements in the energy and general sciences. This volume contains the final reports of the students from the 1987 program.
