Science and Engineering Research Semester for undergraduate students. Program description and application

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:10156392
In many ways, DOE`s ability to accomplish its mission in the future rests upon the availability of appropriately trained scientists, engineers, and techniques at all degree levels. For this purpose, a number of programs and activities--including science and engineering research semester--have been established for university students and faculty. Such programs promote training in energy research and allow access to facilities and state-of-the-art equipment/instruments not ordinarily available on campus. The Department of Energy (DOE), through the Science and Energy Research Semester (SERS), provides unique research opportunities for upper-level undergraduate students seven national laboratories, which have established Science Education Centers. SERS participants follow a program with three basic elements (1) participation in ongoing national energy-related research; (2) training and experience in the operation of sophisticated, state-of-the-art equipment and instruments; and (3) seminars, workshops, and coursework designed to supplement the laboratory research experience.
