Studies of the proximity coupling of YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7} through Ag to a Bardeen--Cooper--Schrieffer (BCS) superconductor have shown that the {ital I}{sub {ital c}R} product is systematically much smaller than the BCS limit of {similar to}5 mV. These {ital I}{sub {ital c}R} values range from 10 to 100 {mu}V in the YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7} {ital a} direction to apparently zero in the {ital c} direction. The reduced {ital I}{sub {ital c}R} in the {ital a} direction can be understood as arising from a large boundary resistance, consistent with the mismatch of carrier densities across the YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7}-Ag interface. The same analysis gives an {ital I}{sub {ital c}R} in the {ital c}-oriented junctions that is at least three orders of magnitude larger than observed.
