Optically pumped CW semiconductor ring laser

An optically pumped semiconductor ring laser is described which consists of: a ring-shaped resonant cavity defined by a plurality of optically aligned reflective elements, one of the reflective elements being partially transmissive in order to permit the passage of a laser beam therethrough; a semiconductor lasing medium mounted within the ring-shaped resonant cavity; means for the semiconductor lasing medium within the ring-shaped resonant cavity in such a manner to permit the passing of the laser beam through the semiconductor lasing medium; means for providing a vacuum and temperature controlled environment surrounding the semiconductor lasing medium, the vacuum and temperature controlling means permitting the passage of the laser beam therethrough; means for providing a beam of electromagnetic radiation for pumping the semiconductor lasing medium of the ring laser; means for directing the pump beam into the ring-shaped resonant cavity; focusing/defocusing means optically aligned with the semiconductor lasing medium for focusing the pump beam onto the lasing medium and for focusing the laser beam onto the semiconductor lasing medium and for defocusing the laser beam exiting from the semiconductor lasing medium; whereby the pump beam initiates a lasing action within the ring-shaped resonant cavity to produce the laser beam, the laser beam producing a pair of outputs, the outputs existing from the resonant cavity through the partially transmissive reflective element of the ring-shaped resonant cavity.
