This paper describes a laser apparatus. It comprises: a pumping laser for providing an output laser beam; an optically pumped laser having a resonant optical cavity including laser beam output means. The resonant cavity further having a lasing region containing a lasing medium; first means for focusing and coupling the pumping laser output beam from the pumping laser to a small spot movable within the lasing medium. The first means including second means for receiving the pumping laser output beam and directing it along a first fixed optical path having a first fixed direction and a first fixed axis. The first means further including third means for receiving the pumping laser output beam from the second means and directing it along a movable optical path having a movable second direction and movable second axis. The third means directing the pumping laser output beam to the lasing medium as a small moving spot and producing a pumped laser output beam, and second fourth means for coupling the pumped laser output beam out of the resonant cavity output means via at least the third means.
