Several commercial high-Cr/sub 2/O/sub 3/ refractories (containing 60 to 90 wt pct Cr/sub 2/O/sub 3/) with potential for application in slagging gasifiers were evaluated for thermal-shock resistance by means of water-quench tests. The results show that the high-Cr/sub 2/O/sub 3/ refractories are considerably more susceptible to thermal-shock damage than the commercially available 90 pct Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/-10 pct Cr/sub 2/O/sub 3/ refractories. High-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ refractories, however, may undergo catastrophic corrosion under slagging conditions. The calculated R'''' and R /SUB st/ values for the test refractories indicate that R'''' provides a good measure of thermal-shock-damage resistance of the refractories; R /SUB st/ , on the other hand, did not show any systematic correlation, probably owing to the limited amount of data currently available.
