Certain metal ions, when present with cellulose acetate in pH 7-buffered hypochlorite solutions, increased the rate of deacetylation. Cellulose acetate filter pads showed definite deterioration with cobalt and nickel ions compared with the other 3d transition metals tested. Cellulose acetate was synthesized with C-labeled acetyl groups and deacetylation was expressed as increased radioactivity in the aqueous phase. The 3,4,5d transition metal ions were examined. Cobalt and ruthenium had the greatest effect followed by iron, nickel, rhenium, palladium, and silver. Copper and gold had only a slight effect. Research by the US Bureau of Reclamation reported in this paper suggests similar reactions are possible for cellulose acetate membranes used in reverse osmosis desalting technology.
