CO/sub 2/ - the leading edge of enhanced oil recovery

In the Four Corners area of S.W. Colorado, 2 major oil companies have completed a drilling program to prove reserves in 2 important fields. The fields - McElmo Dome and Doe Canyon - produce neither oil nor natural gas. They produce carbon dioxide (CO/sub 2/). Nearly 500 miles and 2 states away, oil production in the Wasson field in the Texas Panhandle has begun to decline. After several years of a successful waterflood project in the Denver unit of the field, production has dropped steadily. The connection between these 2 fields is a $520 million, 30-in. pipeline project with compressor stations to bring the carbon dioxide from Colorado to Texas. Engineers estimate approximately 280 additional million bbl of oil can be recovered from the field if CO/sub 2/ flooding is used to enhance production.
