A study was made relating the change in the rate of chemical reactions to changes in the surface composition of the catalyst. The catalyst used was platinum-ruthenium bimetallic clusters on silica supports and alumina supports. The reactions studied included methanation, Fischer-Tropsch, cyclohexane hydrogenolysis and dehydrogenation of cyclohexane. It was concluded that surface enrichment of the Pt occurred in all Pt-Ru bimetallic cluster catalysts studied. Also, dilution of the silica-supported Pt-Ru bimetallic clusters with Pt increases the selectivity for methane formation, thereby decreasing the selectivity of the Fischer-Tropsch products. It was also concluded that reactions between Co and H occurs nearly exclusively on the Ru sites. The fact that the rate of cyclohexane hydrogenolysis was observed to decrease linearly as the surface concentration of Pt was increased was also determined.
