Activation of calcium transport into synaptosomes by phospholipase C specific for phosphatidylinositols

Journal Article · · Biochemistry (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
OSTI ID:5722253

The influence of phospholipases C of various origin and specificity on the level of accumulation of calcium by synaptosomes isolated from the rat brain was investigated with the aid of an isotope label. It was shown that phosphatidylinositol-specific phospholipases C can stimulate Ca/sup 2 +/ transport into synaptosomes, whereas phospholipase C exhibiting no specific effect on any fraction of the membrane lipids is ineffective or lowers the level of accumulation of calcium by the synaptosomes. The detected effects can be explained by activation of the phosphatidylinositol metabolism and an increase in the content in the synaptosomal membranes of its products that activate calcium transport, as well as a partial destruction of the membranes under the action of phospholipases.
