Post-war coal production reached 78,000,000 metric tons in 1950, over 104,000,000 tons in 1960, and 192,600,000 tons in 1978. In addition, brown coal/lignite production has grown; at the present time, it is 40,000,000 tons per year, or 11,000,000 to 12,000,000 tons of standard coal equivalent. Poland has hardly any other sources of energy within its frontiers, and as a result, the Middle East oil crisis stimulated plans to search for domestic oil and gas sources to reduce imports, even from the USSR, to preserve exchange. Likewise, research and development activity has intensified to liquefy and gasify coal, to perfect fluidized-bed combustion, and to support the growth of central and district heating by cogeneration.
