In 1978, brown coal/lignite was produced in 22 countries throughout the world, and total output amounted to 939,100,000 metric tons compared with 911,800,000 tons in 1977. The world's largest producer of brown coal/lignite in 1978 was the German Democratic Republic with an output of 253,600,000 tons, followed by the Soviet Union with 168,400,000 tons, and the Federal Republic of Germany with 123,600,000 tons. These three countries together accounted for 58% of the total world production in 1978. European production of brown coal/lignite was 668,200,000 tons, accounting for 71% of the world's total output in 1978. The largest European resources of these low calorific coals occur primarily in the Federal Republic of Germany, the German Democratic Republic, Poland, and Czechoslovakia. A review of the world's four largest producers of brown coal/lignite is given.
