A new Dutch approach to LNG cargo tanks offers greater efficiency in the use of ship space, greater safety in the event of collision, easier repair of leaks, less complicated structure, and lower construction and operating costs than conventional LNG tanks. The tanker has the shape of a catamaran with two torpedo-shaped hulls connected together by four connecting elements which support three cargo tanks above the hulls. Cylindrical with spherical ends, the tanks are longitudinally arranged and accessible from all sides. The abeam (width or side-to-side) dimension of the tanks is less than the abeam dimension of the connected hulls so that the tanks are protected from side collisions.
