Sharing arrangements in the oil and gas industry are discussed as they relate to Revenue Ruling 77-176. The historical development of intangible drilling cost election is reviewed. Earlier IRS rulings are discussed. Several cases related to oil and gas farmouts are presented. Revenue Ruling 77-176 is fully explained.
