A farmout agreement is usually defined as a contract to assign oil- and gas-lease rights in a certain acreage upon completion of drilling obligations and the performance of any other covenants and conditions therein contained. This review of the legal aspects of farmout agreements as alternatives to formal lease agreements includes a description of farmouts followed by an outline of major provisions in a typical agreement. The appendix includes a checklist of questions that lawyers will want to ask their clients, a sample farmout agreement, and a list of six recommended references. (DCK)
