This paper reports that while the GRI compact gas meter program initially addressed technical issues, there was not a clear consensus within the natural gas industry concerning both technical and market requirements. While meter size is important for addressing potential markets, other distribution system components such as service line installation costs, the size of the entire regulator/meter set assembly, and additional meter features impact a compact meter's successful commercialization.
