A visit to the BI-GAS Pilot facility was conducted during which the facility and its operation were explained. Some health and safety hazards were described. The facility, located 50 miles east of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was expected to eventually employ about 150 to 200 persons. At one part of the operation coal was sprayed with water to lay the dust. An open storage pile was noted near the receiving bin and slightly to one side of the conveyor. The pile had been acceptably compacted and was continually watched for fires. Personnel were issued seven sets of clothing which the company laundered. No requirements were made for showering or other physical hygiene practices. Noise hazards in the coal and quartz (14808607) preparation building, in the utility building, and in the compressor shed have been noted. Little concern was expressed for heat stress. No indications of what levels of nickel-carbonyl (13463393) might be expected to be formed had been offered as yet. Steps were being taken to monitor all carbon-monoxide (630080) levels. An elaborate set of checks and balances was in place to enable maintenance workers to safely enter various vessels for repair or routine maintenance.
