Advanced refinery process heater. Annual report, October 1984-September 1985

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:5713865
Activity during the second year of the project included selecting a refinery in Southern California to act as the field-test site for the advanced heater, completing the laboratory combustion tests of prototype Pyrocore burners, and evaluating the economic feasibility of using the Pyrocore burners in full-scale heaters. The original construction schedule was delayed due to the time required to formalize the relationship with the host refinery. The project is now proceeding ahead as planned. The prototype burner was operated under realistic thermal conditions for 3200 hours in Alzeta's combustion lab. The results established the basic soundness of the burner's design. The study performed to determine the economic feasibility of retrofitting Pyrocore burners for NO/sub x/ reduction showed that these burners are a very cost-effective NO/sub x/ reduction method. Activities in the third project year will include completion of the design of the heater and initiation of hardware procurement and fabrication.
