On the spontaneous compactification of d = 11 supergravity

The Freund-Rubin mechanism of spontaneous compactification is generalized to include nonzero vacuum expectation values of the Rarita-Schwinger field. A new solution of d = 11 supergravity is constructed which describes compactification on squashed 7-sphere with torsion.
