Steps are now being taken to implement Phase 2 of the Iranian Gas Trunkline (IGAT) project. When this phase is completed, in late 1973 or early 1974, the system will be capable of moving gas at the rate of 1,650 MMscfd. Moving that volume of gas for distances of as great as 1,100 km requires a huge gas-gathering, treating, and transmission system. The IGAT system is believed to be the largest and most complex pipeline project ever undertaken at one time. A base map shows the route of the line. The present project developed from the Iranian-Russian agreement entered into in Autumn 1965. It contracted for the delivery of up to 1,050 MMscfd by 1974, at a price of 18.7 cents/Mcf. Because of the multitude of the variables in its area of responsibility, Iranian Management and Engineering Group Ltd. (IMEG) generated its own computer programs to develop the overall conceptual design, perform detailed engineering and specify equipment, and resolve special problems as they arose. The basic programs and their interrelationships are illustrated.
