Differential crushing policy is aimed at fine crushing of the weakly caking gas coal and lean caking coal and coarse reduction of the highly caking coal in order to prevent over-crushing and to reduce the power consumption. A newly designed stationary screen for screening fines from 10-11% moisture charge material is described. Apertures of 15-19 mm successfully remove the fines. Removal of the minus 0.5 mm (down to 35%) and the improved size consist obtained by fine crushing of the weakly caking coal, assisted by cutting the ash in the plus 6 mm fraction, gave a much stronger coke. Flue temperatures were increased, and power costs were reduced as a result. The screens have been installed at several coking plants with all-round improvement.
