The charge form factor of the neutron in the region 0< or =q/sup 2/< or =152 F/sup -2/ is extracted from the existing experimental data on the differential cross section for electron--deuteron elastic scattering. A model-independent description of the deuteron structure is given on the basis of a modified dispersion approach, in which the electromagnetic form factors of the deuteron are completely determined in terms of the phase shifts for np scattering. An analytic approximation is given for the charge form factor of the neutron, G/sub E/n(q/sup 2/), over the entire range of q/sup 2/. Taking into account relativistic corrections, a value is obtained for G/sup prime//sub E/n (0) which is in agreement with indirect data on the scattering of thermal neutrons by atomic electrons.
