Modular TMR multiprocessor system

A tri-module redundant (TMR) multiprocessor system for increased availability to a real-time application is presented. The system incorporates three homogeneous Z-80 based microcomputers, each with necessary analog/digital I/O facilities and global communication hardware. The software design is modular in nature and is, therefore, cost effective and adaptable for expansion to the N-module redundant (NMR) system. The retry mechanism has been employed for recovery from transient faults. The number of retries is programmable, which makes the system adaptable to an application environment. Retry is performed on a task basis rather than through a full process, for increased time efficiency. The system works in normal (TMR fault tolerant) and degraded (dual-processor fault detection) modes. Reconfiguration is uniform in different fault conditions, which makes reliability estimations simple. Removal of a faulty processor and its reinstallation after repairs is transparent to the application. The developed system has been employed to drive a mobile trolley.
