The spatial configuration of the stimulated oscillations of the poloidal magnetic field near the chamber wall has been measured for various frequencies of the current in the helical winding and for various discharge conditions in the tokamak. The oscillations are identified as a superposition of ideal MHD modes and a tearing mode. The experimental results cast light on the design of feedback sensors which can distinguish the tearing mode from the overall perturbation of the magnetic field.
