Drift effects in the theory of MHD tokamak modes

The influence of drift effects on ideal and resistive MHD modes in a tokamak is studied. In contrast with earlier work on the subject, the toroidal nature of the tokamak magnetic field is taken into account. The geometry leads to important new effects if the density gradient is accompanied by a plasma temperature gradient. The growth rates and stability boundaries are found for the drift instabilities associated with the m=1 internal kink mode, the Suydam mode, the resistive kink mode, and the g and tearing modes.
